Denmark allocates $1.45 mn for Ukraine’s reconstruction, boosts municipal collaboration

Denmark has announced an additional 10 million kroner ($14.5 million) financial contribution to strengthen Danish-Ukrainian municipal cooperation in the reconstruction of Ukraine.

This comes after Denmark signed a security agreement with Ukraine, committing to support the country both militarily and civilly for the next decade.

“The cooperation allows Ukrainians to express their visions for the future of their municipalities, and the Danish municipalities assist them in achieving these goals. It’s simple, but effective,” Dan Jørgensen, the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, said.

The funding will support partnerships between the Danish municipalities of Aarhus and Copenhagen municipalities and the Ukrainian cities of Lviv, Kyiv, and Mykolaiv.

The municipalities have identified several potential areas of cooperation: energy efficiency, water supply, urban development/climate adaptation, promotion of conditions for the private sector, treatment of veterans and individuals with disabilities/traumas, and youth involvement.

The initiative stems from a decision made in the spring of 2023, where Ukraine and Denmark agreed to include Danish municipalities in the reconstruction support through the Ukraine Fund.

The projects focus on building the capacity of Ukrainian municipalities through study visits to Danish municipalities, training of personnel, and the presentation of technological solutions, procedures, and strategies within specific sectors. The cooperation also includes visits by officials and experts from Danish municipalities to their Ukrainian counterparts to implement the collaboration in Ukraine.
