Ukraine's Defense Forces downed a record number of Russian copter drones in August, Ukraine's Defense Ministry reported on 9 September. Copter drones are the small multirotors that swarm the front line, used to scout positions, and cue infantry assaults, with some rigged to drop grenades. Once one finds a target, Russian forces can follow up with an aerial bomb strike, artillery fire, an infantry assault, or swarms of first-person-view (FPV) strike drones.
Ukraine logs and rewards those kills through a fast-growing points system that now reaches almost every drone unit, so a record month tracks a wider reporting net as much as heavier Russian drone use. Either way, the count is one rough gauge of how thickly Russian drones hang over a war that has already cost Russia more than 1.5 million troops killed and wounded, by Ukraine's General Staff count.
A record haul of copter drones
Ukrainian units downed nearly 24,000 copter-type drones over the month, the highest total since Ukraine launched its e-Points program, which lets units earn credit for verified strikes and spend it on new gear. Ukraine's top commander put the active front at about 1,200 kilometers in February. Nearly 24,000 over the 31 days of August averages almost 800 a day, or very roughly one Russian copter drone downed for every kilometer and a half of front each day. The ministry said its forces also struck more than 35,000 fixed-wing drones over the same period.

Ukraine hits back, from the Black Sea to the rear
The ministry described a shift at sea as a separate result of August: where much of the earlier activity had been in the Sea of Azov, it said, Ukrainian strikes were now reaching into the Black Sea, toward Novorossiysk and Sochi. Novorossiysk is the port Russia's Black Sea Fleet fell back to after Ukrainian strikes drove it from occupied Crimea.
Ukrainian crews hit costlier hardware, too: a Su-30 fighter jet, an L-39 Albatros aircraft, and a Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter. Under the e-Points program, the ministry confirmed 30,246 Russian soldiers killed or wounded over the month, each logged on video in the DELTA battlefield system and verified by the Innovation Development Fund at Ukraine's Digital Transformation Ministry.

The ministry said Ukraine's unmanned systems are pushing Russia to rethink how it protects its logistics and key rear sites, and to look for new ways to counter the Starlink links Ukrainian drones use. Even so, it said, its forces keep striking more than 20 kilometers behind the line, along the main routes Russia uses to move troops, equipment, and ammunition, forcing it to rebuild its logistics and pull units farther back.
