Two more Patriots online: Ukraine’s hypersonic missile shield just got stronger with new delivery from Germany

Ukraine has brought two additional Patriot air defense systems into service to protect cities and critical infrastructure, the Defense Ministry announced on 1 January.

The move strengthens Ukraine’s ability to defend major urban areas, energy facilities, transport hubs, and other key sites that Russia has repeatedly targeted with missile and drone attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion.

The ministry said the systems were obtained through recent agreements with the German government. The new Patriots have already been deployed as part of Ukraine’s air defense network.

Patriot is among the most capable air defense systems in service

Patriot is a US-made surface-to-air missile system used to intercept aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. It is considered one of the most capable air defense systems currently in service.

Ukraine has relied on Patriot systems to counter Russian missile attacks, including strikes using ballistic and high-speed weapons aimed at energy and civilian infrastructure.

Patriots have already reduced damage to Ukraine's energy facilities

The Defense Ministry said Patriot systems currently in service have reduced damage from Russian cruise and ballistic missile attacks on energy facilities and civilian areas.

Ukraine continues to expand its layered air defense as Russia maintains regular missile and drone strikes across the country.

Germany's defense commitment to Ukraine is growing

The ministry said the deployment is connected to the 17 December signing of new defense agreements with Germany worth more than €1.2 billion.

He said that following agreements between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Germany has committed to provide €11.5 billion in support to Ukraine in 2026.

A single Patriot battery can track 100 targets and engage eight at once

The Defense Ministry said Patriot systems are designed to engage a wide range of targets. Ukrainian officials say the system can intercept hypersonic missiles such as Russia’s Kinzhal and Zircon.

According to the ministry, Patriot radars can detect and track multiple targets at the same time. A single battery can monitor up to 100 targets and engage up to eight simultaneously.

The system can operate in an automated mode, allowing it to respond quickly to incoming threats. This is critical when intercepting high-speed missiles with short flight times.

Patriot missiles can engage targets at altitudes of up to 24 kilometers and at ranges of up to 160 kilometers, allowing coverage of large areas.
