The European Union called on its member states to cut their natural-gas use by 15% under a new plan. The plan aims to prepare the bloc for a possible total cut of Russian gas supplies to the European Union, RFE/RL reports.
The EU countries are expected to do their best to reduce their gas consumption by 15% between August 1 and March 31 as compared to their average consumption over the same period of the past five years.
"Some countries that depend heavily on Russian gas imports, such as Hungary, have demanded exemptions from the new gas-saving measures," RFE/RL wrote.
