Russia is testing a new drone air defense system. On 3 April, the Kalashnikov Concern announced the start of preliminary tests of the short-range air defense system "Krona", specifically designed to counter low-altitude unmanned aerial threats, according to Army Recognition.

Russia's air defense and drone solutions are quickly developing. Ukraine and its allies need to continue accelerating technologies to maintain a tactical advantage.

This marks a new stage in the development of Russian SHORAD solutions focused on countering drones, which have become a key factor in modern warfare.

Will “Krona” become Russia’s answer to mass drone warfare?

The Krona system integrates surveillance assets, command-and-control architecture, and mobile or stationary firing units into a unified network.

This enables a “sensor-to-shooter” principle, where target detection and engagement occur as quickly and as coordinated as possible.

The complex is equipped with a mixed missile load: Sosna-R interceptors and 9M333 optically guided missiles.

The declared engagement range is 1 to 6 km, altitude up to 3.5 km, and the deployment time is around 10 minutes.

Dual guidance system as survival strategy

One key feature is the combination of two guidance principles within a single system.

Sosna-R uses beam-riding guidance, while the 9M333 relies on optical homing.

This creates a “dual interception loop,” theoretically improving effectiveness against small targets with varying flight profiles and in challenging visibility conditions.

The launcher carries up to ten missiles: six Sosna-R and four 9M333, ready for immediate use.

Not just air defense: speed, automation, and dense territorial protection

“Krona” is positioned not only as a strike system but as part of a dense area-defense concept.

It focuses on protecting assets where response speed, automation, and networked fire control are critical.

Preliminary tests are being conducted under conditions as close as possible to real combat, with specialized personnel involved to identify technical and procedural shortcomings.

However, the start of testing does not yet indicate proven effectiveness — the system is only entering a validation phase before potential refinement and certification.
