German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed a phone call with US President Donald Trump, writing on X that the two leaders covered Ukraine, Iran, and Israel, European Pravda reports.
"We agreed to stay in close contact. Our talks will continue in the near future," Merz wrote.
The call comes amid heightened friction between Berlin and Washington over the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran. Merz has previously stated that had Washington consulted Berlin before acting, "we would not have advised going down this path."
The planned follow-up contact signals ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two leaders. According to reports, Merz is also preparing to invite Trump for a state visit to Germany in September — a move that would mark a significant step in managing the transatlantic tensions that have built up around the Iran conflict.
