“Afraid to show their society”: Moscow blocks online war casualty database that names Russia’s dead

Russian authorities have blocked access to “I Want to Return” (“Хочу вернуть”), a Ukrainian database that tracks casualties and injuries among Russian troops, the Coordination Headquarters on the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported on 13 February.

The website, launched in January 2026, publishes verified information on Russian servicemembers killed or wounded in Ukraine, including names, service numbers, units, medical diagnoses, and dates of injury or death.

156,000 dead, 96,000 wounded - and counting

It currently lists more than 156,000 dead and 96,000 wounded, with weekly updates adding new confirmed entries.

According to the Coordination Headquarters, the Kremlin’s move is aimed at shielding the Russian public from the scale of losses.

"Afraid to show their society"

“The Russian authorities are afraid to show their society the real consequences of the war against Ukraine,” the project said.

The headquarters added that, despite the block, hundreds of users from Russia continue to access the site daily via VPN to seek information on relatives or fellow soldiers.

The project is intended to provide transparency about Russian casualties and help families obtain information about missing or injured servicemembers. The Coordination Headquarters said it highlights the human cost of Russia’s invasion and exposes efforts to conceal its effects from the public.
