Britain joins PURL: $205 million for US-made weapons as NATO aims to raise $15 billion for Ukraine in 2026

The United Kingdom will join NATO’s Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, which provides for the procurement of US-made weapons for Ukraine, Politico reports. Previously, London supported Kyiv through various mechanisms but had not made direct financial contributions specifically to this program.

Now the situation is changing: the UK will allocate $205 million (£150 million) to finance PURL.

Patriot as a critical shield: the only system against ballistic missiles

Under the initiative, Ukraine receives missiles for US-made Patriot systems. At present, Patriot is the only system capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles with 500 kg warheads.

Russia can launch up to 30 ballistic missiles against Ukraine in single salvo. Here’s why that changes everything for 2026

In January, Russia launched a record 91 missiles in a single month. The attacks resulted in widespread power outages, leaving millions without electricity as temperatures reached –20°C.

“Together we must provide Ukraine with the critical air defense it needs in response to Putin’s brutal onslaught," says UK Defense Secretary John Healey.

He adds that he is "pleased that the UK is committing £150 million to PURL."

Weapons funded by allies: how the scheme works

The Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) was created last summer to sustain the supply of American weapons. Under President Donald Trump, new non-repayable US military aid was released, but the White House agreed to continue arms transfers provided that other allies finance the purchases.

Last year, the program raised approximately $5 billion for Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the Alliance is “absolutely confident” it can mobilize an additional $15 billion this year.

NATO defense ministers are expected to discuss further support for Ukraine at a meeting in Brussels.

Pressure within the Alliance: who pays more?

London’s announcement comes amid growing internal pressure within NATO over the fair distribution of the financial burden. Observers note that countries such as Norway, the Netherlands, and Germany have been carrying a disproportionately large share of contributions.

The UK’s decision to join PURL financing may signal an expansion of collective responsibility for providing Ukraine with critically needed air defense systems.
