US President Donald Trump assessed his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy positively, which took place on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on 22 January, UkrInform reports. He added that the process is part of broader diplomatic efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine.
US-led peace efforts, which, however, have not yielded clear results, as Russia shows no willingness to end the war. The peace plan is 90% ready, said Zelenskyy previously.
Two key documents: security guarantees and prosperity plan
The Ukrainian and American sides are currently working on two key documents:
- an agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine;
- an economic deal on postwar recovery and prosperity, with an estimated total value of around $800 billion.
These documents were expected to be signed during the World Economic Forum in Davos. However, work on them is ongoing, pointing to the complexity of the negotiations and the scale of future commitments.
The American leader described the talks as “very good,” emphasizing that the war must end because it is taking too many human lives. The meeting lasted about an hour.
Washington prepares for separate talks with the Kremlin
Commenting on prospects for settling the war, Trump noted that the US plans separate meetings with the Russian side, including contacts at the highest level.
“We’re meeting with Russia, that’ll take place tomorrow, and we’re going to be meeting with President Putin,” the US president stated.
Zelenskyy also gave his speech at the Davos forum. He said that no security guarantees for Ukraine after peace will work without the participation of the US.
