President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected suggestions that Ukraine is obstructing peace negotiations, stating that ongoing Russian strikes demonstrate Moscow's lack of interest in any agreements, according to his evening address.
The statement comes after US President Donald Trump claimed on January 15 that Zelenskyy, rather than Russian President Vladimir Putin, is hindering a potential peace deal.
"Ukraine has never been and will never be an obstacle to peace. Russian missiles, Russian Shaheds, Russia's attempt to destroy Ukraine are clear proof that Russia doesn't need any agreements at all," Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that Russian attacks targeting the country's energy infrastructure show Moscow's true intentions. Ukrainians are experiencing blackouts lasting 20-30 hours due to Russian strikes on critical infrastructure, he noted.
Zelenskyy reported speaking with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about strengthening air defense capabilities and increasing contributions to the PURL program, which allows Ukraine to purchase air defense missiles. The conversation also covered diplomatic efforts with the United States.
"When Ukrainians have no electricity for 20-30 hours because of Russia, and when Russian strikes are aimed at breaking our energy system and our people, it's Russia that needs to be pressured," Zelenskyy stated.
The president said Ukraine will significantly intensify its diplomatic work, both public and private, official and unofficial.
Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy held a special conference call with officials responsible for recovery and emergency management. The meeting included government representatives, military officials, and regional authorities from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Chernihiv.
Zelenskyy instructed Prime Minister and First Deputy Prime Minister for Energy to increase electricity imports and reserve supply capabilities. He also ordered the Ministry of Internal Affairs to establish support points in cities and ensure residents can access information about heating and electricity through the 112 hotline.
The president announced that businesses will be allowed to operate as support points for civilians, with adjustments to curfew regulations to facilitate planning. Government officials have already engaged with retail chains on this initiative.
Defense Minister and Air Force Commander briefed Zelenskyy on protection measures for energy facilities. Kharkiv experienced severe strikes on critical infrastructure today, while Kyiv faced Shahed drone attacks in the morning and evening. Border regions remain in difficult conditions, with Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa oblasts requiring enhanced protection.
