NATO studies Ukraine’s logistics: 175 allied commanders learn from years of Ukraine’s struggle in Germany

NATO is closely studying the logistics of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The recent joint NATO–Ukraine conference, CJL3C, held in Mainz, Germany, has been dedicated to sharing experiences in military logistics, according to the Ukrainian General Staff.

The CJL3C conference serves as a platform for the systematic exchange of practices accumulated by Ukraine over more than a decade of war against Russia.

Organizers have emphasized that Ukrainian solutions are of critical importance for NATO and its allies, who are reassessing their doctrines, strategies, and approaches to large-scale warfare on the European continent.

Seven dimensions of modern warfare: What NATO is studying

During the conference, participants have focused on seven key areas that define military effectiveness in the 21st century:

  • resilience of supply and distribution systems;
  • identification and reinforcement of logistical vulnerabilities;
  • adaptability of doctrines to real combat conditions;
  • information as a force multiplier;
  • investment in personnel training;
  • innovation in maintenance and repair;
  • development of domestic defense-industrial capacity.
  • Together, these areas form a new model of logistics, not as a rear-area function, but as a fully integrated element of combat power.

Special emphasis has been placed on logistics as one of the decisive factors of modern warfare, often underestimated in peacetime.

“The conference highlighted that logistics, often overlooked, is now a decisive factor in modern warfare," said the NSATU Assistant Commander Brigadier General Witold Bartoszek.

According to him, Ukraine’s experience is reshaping perceptions of how sustainment systems must operate during prolonged and high-intensity combat.

175 NATO command representatives took part in conference

The conference has been organized by the Support Division of NATO’s Security Assistance and Training Initiative for Ukraine (NSATU), with active participation from the Ukrainian side. Approximately 175 representatives from NATO command structures and Allied nations have participated in it.

In effect, the event has signaled recognition that Ukraine is no longer merely a recipient of security assistance, but a source of knowledge, practices, and solutions shaping the future of European and transatlantic security.
