Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy identified two outstanding issues in a 20-point peace plan currently under discussion, according to his comments to journalists following a nearly three-hour meeting with US President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on 28 December.
The unresolved points concern territories and control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. "These are two questions that remain specifically in the 20-point document. And that's why I said that this 20-point plan is 90% ready," Zelenskyy said.
On security guarantees, the Ukrainian president said progress has been complete. "On security guarantees, 100% everything is ready," Zelenskyy said, though he noted that details regarding the duration of these security guarantees are still being discussed.
The meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump lasted nearly three hours instead of the planned one hour. After the talks, both presidents spoke with European leaders.
Trump claimed the meeting brought the parties closer to ending the war. Zelenskyy confirmed that the 20-point peace plan had reached 90% agreement, with security guarantees for Ukraine fully agreed upon at 100%.
Negotiating teams are scheduled to meet next week "to finalize all discussed issues." A final decision on the documents for peaceful settlement that Ukraine is working on with the US is expected in January.
Before meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump held a conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which he described as "good and very productive." Trump confirmed he would call Putin again after the meeting with the Ukrainian leader.
