Nearly 60 weather balloons from Belarus crossed into Polish airspace on Christmas Eve, some loaded with contraband, others equipped with GPS trackers, according to RMF24. Polish police and border guards are reportedly investigating whether this was merely a smuggling operation, or also a deliberate test of Poland’s air detection systems. One of the balloons caused a blackout after hitting power infrastructure in Lublin Voivodeship.
Polish authorities probe Belarus balloon incursion on Christmas Eve
On 24 December, 59 balloons entered Poland from Belarus on 24 December, with many spotted over Podlaskie and Lublin voivodeships. RMF FM, citing unnamed security sources, reported that the balloons were likely launched as part of a smuggling operation. However, Polish services are not ruling out the possibility that the incursion was also "a test of the response of Poland’s airspace detection systems."
The law enforcement and border guards said 13 of the balloons were carrying loads of cigarettes — around 1,500 packs per bundle — and five detached contraband parcels were also found. Several balloons were equipped with GPS tracking units and meteorological probes.
Most of the interceptions took place in Podlaskie Voivodeship, but four incidents were recorded in Lublin Voivodeship as well — both in eastern Poland. Some balloons reportedly reached altitudes of up to 9,000 meters, placing further strain on Poland’s aerial monitoring systems.

The balloon incursion also caused damage on the ground. In one case in Lublin Voivodeship, a balloon carrying cargo struck an energy line, tearing it down and cutting off electricity for a number of residents. Authorities said the objects were not only a security concern but also a direct nuisance to local communities.
