Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war, approximately ten railway stations in Ukraine have been destroyed, according to Ukraine's national state-owned railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia. Around forty more facilities have sustained varying degrees of damage, per UkrInform.
Ukraine keeps trains running despite 50 station attacks
“In total, since the start of the full-scale invasion, we have around ten stations across Ukraine that the enemy has destroyed, and about forty more that have sustained damage of varying degrees,” Ukrzaliznytsia stated.
In cases of partial damage, this includes broken windows and doors that can be repaired quickly. However, some buildings have been completely destroyed.
Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that despite the destruction, most damaged stations have been quickly restored to operational status.
But experts cannot speak of full restoration, as this would require significant funds, which are currently lacking. It is difficult to determine the total amount of losses, as an accurate assessment is impossible, and the figure continues to increase with every new Russian strike.
Fastiv station to return with shelters and a modern design
Company representatives also commented on the future reconstruction of the Fastiv railway station, which was recently destroyed during Russian attacks in the Kyiv Oblast.
“We will definitely not restore the building in its previous format, as the design and convenience sparked significant debate among local residents,” Ukrzaliznytsia assured.
The new station will need to meet modern technical standards, be inclusive and safe, include shelters, and use contemporary materials. A return to the old architectural style is highly unlikely.
Attacks on railway stations target places where people move, work, and wait for trains daily, creating a significant danger for civilians.
