Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during the latest press briefing that he is ready to hold elections even during wartime. He has asked the US, possibly together with European partners, to ensure security for the elections. If security is guaranteed, “within the next 60–90 days, Ukraine will be ready to hold elections."
Zelenskyy is ready to prepare legislation for elections
Speaking to journalists, Zelenskyy has stated that several issues still need to be addressed for the elections to proceed, including voting procedures for military personnel and the establishment of a legal framework to ensure the elections' legitimacy.
US President Donald Trump has claimed that it is time for Ukraine to hold elections, suggesting that the war is being used as a reason not to conduct them.
Zelenskyy has asked members of his Servant of the People party and other parliamentarians to prepare proposals for legislative changes that would allow elections during martial law.
“I will be in Ukraine tomorrow. I expect proposals from our partners, I expect proposals from our deputies, and I am ready to go to elections,” the Ukrainian president says.
"I am always ready"
Earlier, Zelenskyy responded to Trump’s call to hold elections in Ukraine, saying he is always ready.
“I am always ready for elections,” he told La Repubblica during a brief conversation with journalists in Rome, as he left his hotel to go to Palazzo Chigi for a meeting with Giorgia Meloni.
At the same time, European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper has noted that presidential elections in Ukraine can only take place when the conditions are right, as per European Pravda. The aggressive Russian war is ongoing. She also emphasized that Zelenskyy is a democratically elected leader.
