Russian forces have gained a foothold on two streets in Toretsk in Donetsk Oblast, according to Anastasiia Bobovnikova, spokesperson for the “Luhansk” operational-tactical group, as per UkrInform.
The seizure of Toretsk would allow the Russians to advance either towards Pokrovsk or in the Avdiivka direction, towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, reinforcing troops in the Chasiv Yar area, said Ivan Tymochko, head of the Council of Reservists of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
He said the offensive is vital for the Russians, as Niu York and Toretsk are mining towns with well-developed industries where coal is extracted.
“The situation remains challenging. Unfortunately, the enemy has made some advances and has secured positions on two neighboring streets in Toretsk, reaching Tsentralna Street,” said Bobovnikova.
According to the spokesperson, the Russian military attempts to breach Ukrainian defenses in the Chasiv Yar area. Despite decreasing assaults, Russian troops are bringing in new reinforcements to the front lines.
“The weather impacts both sides: the enemy and us. Currently, it is still dry in Donbas. Unfortunately, it is easier for the enemy to attack us, but it is also easier for us to defend ourselves in dry weather and repel their assaults.
However, the enemy will become bogged down in the mud when the weather changes and rains begin. They will be unprepared for the winter, as we have already seen that the Russian army command completely disregards its personnel. On the other hand, we will be better prepared during the fall and winter periods,” the spokesperson said.
Bobovnikova added that professional units of the Russian army are operating in the city, involving soldiers from motorized rifle brigades and soldiers from special forces, which are well-trained and well-equipped.
Russian troops continue to advance through the urban area of Toretsk along Tsentralna Street, where heavy and active fighting is ongoing.
