According to Russian state media reports, the body of former Ukrainian MP Illia Kiva was found at a resort near Moscow.
The Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda, citing unnamed sources, alleged that Ukraine’s Security Service was behind Kiva’s death. Ukrainska Pravda reported that Kiva was fatally shot in a ‘special operation’.
A month before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Kiva fled first to Europe and then to Moscow. On Russian television, he endorsed Russia’s war on Ukraine, stating Ukrainians needed “liberation” and comprised “one people” with Russians and Belarusians.
In March 2022, Ukraine’s parliament voted to strip Kiva of his seat, accusing him of undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity and committing treason. This November, a Ukrainian court sentenced Kiva in absentia to 14 years in prison for several alleged criminal offenses.
