Possible Russian attack on the power plant in Ukraine will affect the whole world – NATO Military Committee

On 3 July, the head of NATO’s Military Committee, Rob Bauer mentioned that if Russia attacks Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station (ZNPP), its consequences will affect the whole world. It is according to the interview Rob Bauer gave for LBC.

It comes amid warnings from Ukraine that Russia has mined the ZNPP in southeastern Ukraine. It is the largest in Europe and among the ten largest in the world.

If the station were to be attacked, Rob Bauer said the consequences would reach beyond a typical security issue, affecting the entire world.

“If this happens, then it will be a much bigger problem than just a military problem or something only for NATO. This is something that the world will be involved in; this will have an enormous impact in Europe,” he said.

Military Committee Chairman stressed that the situation with ZPNN is an environmental disaster and a medical problem. “This is beyond just NATO. This is beyond just a security issue,” he added.

Moreover, Rob Bauer noted in the interview that Ukraine wouldn’t be given fighter jets until its long-awaited counter-offensive against Russia has finished.

Ahead of a key NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, Baeur said that the discussion on the fighters was an important one, but it would not be solved in the short term for this counter-offensive.

“Training those pilots, training the technicians, making sure there is a logistic organization that can actually sustain these aircraft will not be available before this counter-offensive,” NATO’s Military Committee said.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Zelenskyy pleaded with the UK to provide the Ukrainian army with fighter jets, which he believes is crucial to stopping Russia.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba warned that the risk of a terrorist attack by Russia on the ZNPP, which is under the control of its occupation forces, threatens the entire OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe which encompasses three continents – North America, Europe and Asia) area.
