Abductors of Lutsenko and Verbytsky have been detained

The men responsible for the abduction of activists Ihor Lutsenko and Yuriy Verbytsky have been detained by the principal investigative unit of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, the acting Minister of Interior Affairs Arsen Avakov announced on his Facebook page.

"The main investigative department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has arrested the immediate perpetrators of the abduction of Ihor Lutsenko and the murder of Yuriy Verbitsky," he stated.

As reported earlier, Lutsenko and Verbitsky were kidnapped from the Oleksandr hospital early on January 21. Lutsenko brought Verbitsky, with an eye trauma, to the hospital. Unknown persons kidnapped Verbitsky and Lutsenko. According to Lutsenko, the two men were taken somewhere, kept in a garage and beaten. Then Lutsenko was made to kneel next to a tree with a bag over his head and left in the forest. Late on January 22, the body of Yuriy Verbytsky, bearing signs of torture,  was found in the Boryspil forest.

Kyiv police initially claimed Verbytsky had died as the "result of hypothermia." However, according to MP Hennadiy Moskal, Verbytsky died because he was not able to move as a result of the injuries inflicted on him.

"The criminal group that brutally beat up Yuriy T Verbytsky and left him in the frost in the forest, was perfectly aware that a person with such traumas would not be able to move and would not survive," said Moskal, who also cited the results of a forensic examination of the deceased.

On February 25,  the new Prosecutor General Oleh Makhnytsky said that two officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs were responsible for the abduction and murder of Verbytsky.
