Ukrainian-German motor rally in Berlin: The wall of indifference and inaction must fall

Press release- Ukrainian-German motor rally in Berlin and protest entitles “The wall of indifference and inaction must fall”

On August 2nd the Euromaidan Guard in Berlin will join forces with the Ukrainian civil initiative “Automaidan,” which is touring European cities in support of Ukraine, in organizing a motor rally under the motto: “The wall of indifference and inaction must fall. Ukraine defends European values.”

The motor rally will begin at 2 p.m. on the Oberbaumbrücke bridge and will end near the Brandenburg Gate (on May 18th Square), where a big protest will take place after the end of the rally, at 4 p.m. The rally and the demonstration will be streamed live in Kyiv, the live-stream will be organized in collaboration with spilno.tv.

The Berlin Wall was not just a border inside Germany. It was the place where two opposing world views clashed 25 years ago. Democracy, rule of law and freedom reigned in the West. Communist dictatorship, which disregarded these rights and intimidated the citizens by means of terror and propaganda reigned in the East. The Berlin Wall is the fruit of the crimes committed by the communist regime and the GDR. It ruined numerous families, disconnected the lives of friends and cost many people their lives. The places where the wall used to be nowadays serve as a memorial to all those who lost their lives on the way to freedom.

The Berlin wall fell, however Russia is constructing another wall in Europe. Ukraine became a polygon for these crimes. Through the past several months Ukrainians have been fighting for the right of democratic development of their country and freedom: first in the fight against Yanukovych’s corrupt regime, and now against Russia. Over a thousand people have lost their lives already to live in a country with European values. The wall of Putin’s autocratic system already exists and it aims to destroy the achievements of Maidan and block Ukraine’s way towards becoming part of the family of European nations.

The organizers of the rally are asking the German community not to remain idle and not to turn a blind eye to what is happening in Ukraine. Europe cannot silently watch Russia’s criminal actions and hide behind a wall of indifference and inactivity. Ukraine needs more assertive support on part of Europe and, in particular, Germany.
