Alarm clock phone app collects donations for the Ukrainian Army when users hit snooze

When the de-faсto war in eastern Ukraine only started, thousands of people made the decision to go to the frontline as volunteer soldiers. They were supported by another army – civil volunteers who provided them with food, clothes, and weapons. Neither the regular army nor the volunteer battalions could have survived without the help of ordinary Ukrainians who donated money and everything they could for the soldiers. Sadly, the donations were more generous when the battles were harder.

However, the war is ongoing already for 3 years and society lost its initial passion for help. Despite the Minsk Agreements, there are still battles going on in Donbas. And despite the state support for the army, the volunteer one is still crucial.

After three years, many volunteers in Ukraine are burnt out. Some see no sense in doing the state’s job instead of it anymore. And for those who stayed, it becomes more and more difficult to find money for support. That’s why they look for more creative ways of doing it.

Recently volunteers created a mobile application which helps to donate money for the ATO (the war in Ukraine is still officially called the Anti-Terrorist Operation) soldiers in the easiest way.

It is called Wake App in Peace and functions as an alarm. Only that the alarm is actually a lullaby, which makes users sleep longer:

Each extra minute comes at a cost, which the user defines for him/herself. The amount will be automatically withdrawn from the bank account which is linked to the application. The encrypted data of the card will be protected by technologies of Visa and Mastercard according to security certificate PCI DSS Level 1.

The song which is chosen for the application is called Kolyskova [Lullaby]. It is written by Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan and performed by the band Liniya Mannergeyma and Sasha Koltsova specially for the project.

“I am glad that my voice will help to protect life and health of our military. For three years, volunteers cover the most pressing needs of the army soldiers, protecting them not only from injuries but also from the effects of corruption and theft in the army. Helping the fund Povernys Zhyvum [Come Back Alive – part of our Verified ways to help Ukraine list – Ed.], I am confident that the collected funds will be used for the stated purposes,” Sasha Koltsova commented to Ukrainska Pravda.

Artem Karelin, the author of the idea of the application, said that the purpose of his creation is to eliminate discomfort for those who wish to help the army.

“You don’t have to save money or look for an ATM to send money to volunteers. You do not even have to look for a card number of the fund to transfer money. This is a new step in charity,” he says.

The application is available in GooglePlay and AppStore.
