New car sales in Ukraine up by 41% for 2016

According to UkrAvtoProm association, sales of new cars in Ukraine for 2016 increased by 40.9% to 65,562 units, as compared to 2015 when only 46,546 vehicles were sold.

The brands topping the last year’s list by number of sales were Opel, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Seat.

In addition, sales of buses by the end of the year increased by 101.7% as compared to 2015 and achieved 1,293 units. Sales of trucks for last year reached 8,350 units, which represented a 62.1% increase over 2015.

Domestic manufacturing accounted for 5,264 vehicles in Ukraine in 2016. It is a 36.5% reduction over the prior year. Of that number, the vast majority were cars, numbering 4,340 units, commercial vehicles were 603 units, while buses only 321 units.

    But not Russian cars. Russia cancelled its free trade agreement with Ukraine. Kyiv promptly slapped tariffs on Russian car imports, and now Russia doesn’t sell any cars in Ukraine. The Germans, Czechs and Japanese are fine with this.

    good to see, slow steps forward, great to see no Russian vehicles, why should any Ukrainian buy a Russian product? The money is used to invade Ukraine! stop buying Russian products and services anywhere

      Absolutely right! And meanwhile skyrockets sales of Ukrainian cars in Europe. Ukraine should walk on on this path.

    I don’t think that it’s a good thing when car sales go up. People should travel with public transportation more and stop thinking that cars are a status symbol and lack of ability to drive is a total shame.
    I’m a pedestrian and passenger only and I believe I made a morally good decision by refusing to endanger anyone by trying to drive.

      In the context of the article the increased volume of auto sales is merely an indicator telling something about the current state of the economy in Ukraine.

      You’re certainly entitled to your views on personal conveyance versus public transportation and/or on morality seen through that prism, and there maybe a good place and time to discuss things of this nature, but bringing it up here strikes me as a bit odd.

      To see why, imagine an article about an increase of clothes sales in Ukraine and a nudist chiming in to declare that people should wear clothes less, not view them as a status symbol, and the righteousness of walking naked.

      I see your point, but did the article say car prices were cheaper? I thought it just said there were more car sales.

      Which would indicate more people having the money to buy, which is a good thing.

      Of course, many people in Ukraine are still far too poor to buy a new car. But things are starting to change, wages rising, more and better jobs, and the government taking at least some action to curb corruption – this latest move to put a ceiling on retail pharmaceutical prices will be a big step to improving quality of life for many people.

    China’s CRBC company signed a memorandum with Kyiv authorities to build roads in the capital under the contract worth UAH15 billion ($555 mn), Kyiv mayor deputy Ilya Sahajdak told Espreso.TV Jan. 24.

    CRBC has plans to build a highway around Kyiv, another highway from Nyvky to Brovary and a crossroads near Shulavky metro station.

    CRBC will also attract UAH15 bn in investment.

      This ticks several boxes. The Chinese see Ukraine as a strategic investment – they are already the largest buyer of Ukrainian grain, and Ukraine is the gateway to Europe for the Silk Road project.

      More darkly, the Chinese also hope to get Ukrainian military technology in areas where they are weak – if the west doesn’t want this then they need to get serious about investing in and supporting Ukraine.

      And Ukrainian roads are terrible – Chinese will earn plenty of popularity with this project!
