Vakarchuk’s moving appeal to Nadiya Savchenko

Rallies, marches and protests in support of Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko, illegally detained in a Russian prison, have been organized all over the world.

Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, leading vocalist of Okean Elzy addressed a moving appeal to Nadiya on Twitter: “Life is the most precious thing given to us by God! A life of dignity always leads to victory. Your victory is ahead. Nadiya! Live, please live!”.

The musician and other celebrities, such as actress Ada Rohovtseva, actor and former Minister of Culture Yevheniy Nyshchuk and TV host Solomiya Vitivitska, have also written letters of support to Nadiya.

Nadiya Savchenko has been in custody since July 2014.

According to Russian investigators, on June 17, 2014 Savchenko was with the Aidar Battalion near the village of Metalist (Slavyanoserbsk raion, Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine), where she was in charge of covert surveillance and correction of artillery fire targeting “LNR” checkpoints. Two Russian journalists from the Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company were killed in the shelling. She was captured by Russian proxies and transferred illegally to the Russian Federation.

On March 2, 2016, the public prosecutor in Donetsk City Court, Russia demanded that Savchenko be sentenced of 23 years imprisonment in a penal colony. On March 4 Savchenko declared a dry hunger strike. The verdict is to be announced on March 21-22.
