“Give a hand to Ukraine”: an initiative to give free prosthetic hands to Ukrainians that suffered from the Russian invasion

“Give a hand to Ukraine”: an initiative to give free prosthetic hands to Ukrainians that suffered from the Russian invasion
Orest
Orest
Orest learned how to make prosthetic hands by a new technology and has set up the community Give a “Hand” that will work to supply a hand prostheses for Ukrainian soldiers who have lost their hands or fingers in the war in Donbas. This initiative is part of our List of Verified Ways to Help the Ukrainian Army.

Give Ukraine a “Hand” is an initiative started by a man called Orest that took courses to learn how to manufacture and assemble prosthetic hands and learned a methodology to do it for as low as $60 per prosthesis. He established contact with a prosthetic organization and many private manufactures who agreed to create 2-3 hundred prosthetic hands for people in Ukraine for free. On his facebook page Give a “Hand” he seeks to find volunteers interested to help assemble prosthetic hands, find people with disabilities in Ukraine who are missing hands, fingers, arms, and to help raise funds to pay for shipment costs, and to purchase more sophisticated prosthetics for those with more severe mutilations. Funds will also be needed to purchase $7,000 worth of equipment to set up two stations in Ukraine to manufacture new prosthetic hands and to manufacture replacement parts for already distributed hands. New hands will also be needed for kids every couple of years, as they outgrow the hands donated to them. These ‘hands’ will be gifted to Ukrainian people absolutely free. The initiative is running a fundraiser to help with initial costs.

There are few ways to participate in the project/community:

  1. Find a Ukrainian soldier, kid, or person, who is missing finger, hand, arm; make pictures, record information and story, take measurements. Once you find a person in Ukraine who is missing finger/s, hand/s, arm/s, please contact us with a short description and instructions will be given what information to collect and how to take measurements.
  2. Volunteer your time to assemble one or more prosthetic hand, arm, or finger. Once custom-made prosthetic is manufactured, it is shipped to you with specific instructions (instructional video) how to assemble it.
  3. Volunteer your time and funds to ship assembled hand/arm/finger to Ukraine, directly to the home address of the assigned individual with disability.
  4. Donate funds to purchase more sophisticated prosthetic hands/arms, equipment to set up two stations in Ukraine to service replacement parts for and to update already distributed prosthetics. Individual, specific fund raisers will be posted once the needs for funds arise.

March 22 – The West needs a new transatlantic strategy in response to the challenges posed by Russia, – said the President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski, speaking at a forum in Brussels (reports PAP). "The West remained delusional for too long, believing that Russia will choose modernization because it is in its interest to do so", – said Komorowski. "We need a strategy that would unite the West in view of new challenges, in order to adhere to core values and interests of Euro-Atlantic community; a strategy, which would unite the efforts put in by the key institutions, both in the EU and NATO", – emphasized Komorowski.

March 22 – Viktor Yanukovych Jr., younger son of former President of Ukraine, has died in Russia. A Volkswagen he was driving with 5 passengers on board fell through the ice on Lake Baikal.

March 22 – Russia tries to pressure all countries that want to participate in a common missile defense system project, said Philip Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO Allied Command Operations (reports Reuters) when commenting on a statement made previously by the Ambassador of Russia in Denmark Mikhail Vanin about Denmark being a target of a possible Russian nuclear attack if it joins NATO missile defense system. "Romania has come under a lot of pressure when it became a part of the shield. Poland is under great pressure, and now everyone who still wants to join this defense project will be under diplomatic and political pressure", – said Breedlove.

March 22 – In St. Petersburg (Russia) a Russian International Conservative Forum was held with the participation of ultra-right parties of the whole Europe. The organizer was the Russian Conservative Party "Rodyna". Its leader is a member of the fraction of the pro-Putin Party of United Russia in the State Duma of the Russian Federation. As the site of the organization informs, the main goal of the Forum is the creation of a plan of action and a general coordinating committee of all nationalist forces in Russia and Ukraine.

Near the hotel where the Forum was held, there was a protest meeting against this gathering of neo-fascists; people banged their drums and called out anti-fascist slogans. However, the Russian police apprehended eight demonstrators who were demonstrating against the holding of the Forum, and not against the neo-fascists.

In Petersburg there are also the so-called "individual" protests against the holding of this Forum.

An "individual" picket is when one person by her/his self has a poster with a protest – in Russia this is the only form of protest which does not require previous governmental approval.
