Lubomyr Husar on the Maidan and the elections

Major Archbishop- Emeritus, His Beatitude Lubomyr (Husar) is convinced that today a significantly greater number of people in Ukraine desire change than in 2004. However, if Ukrainians squander this opportunity of a second Maidan, it would mean hoping for a third.

“In order not to squander the present chance, we must really get to work. In other words, stop stealing, stop offering and taking bribes, do not hoard money greedily, but instead work to build up the community,” he explained in an interview to the journal Kraina, writes Katolytskyi Ohliadach.

“Stop stealing, stop offering and taking bribes, do not hoard money greedily, but instead work to build up the community. The effect can be like a tidal wave. With God’s help and our work, we won’t waste this opportunity. Re-electing the bandits that previously occupied the Verkhovna Rada would be comparable to losing as second Maidan. Then, try waiting for a third. I for one put my hope in a better future because there has now emerged a generation that is less infected with the old Soviet worldview and habits than earlier generations. There has also come to their assistance a significant number of older people who are likewise ready to work for these changes,” said His Beatitude Lubomyr.

He further cautions that Ukrainians have a lot of hard work ahead of the in order to build a truly democratic government. “Let us proceed carefully. Have you been following the election campaign? The quality of candidates, the philosophy of the deputies, the fact that they continue to buy and sell souls all point to the fact that we have a long way to go,” cautions the Major Archbishop.

At the same time, His Beatitude Lubomyr is convinced that, currently, “there is nothing that can stop us from moving forward…except ourselves, our stupidity, or our laziness,” he remarked.
