Moscow: Ukraine’s non-nuclear status cannot be reexamined

Political News

Ukraine’s non-nuclear status as a country involved in the Treaty for the nonproliferation of nuclear weaponry is not subject to reexamination, said deputy head of the Russian MFA Sergey Riabkov in an interview to RIA Novosti.

He emphasized that any talk of reexamining Ukraine’s current non-nuclear status is unacceptable to Moscow.

According to media reports, the Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey stated at a press conference on Sunday, September 14, that Ukraine will be forced to return to the issue of renewing its nuclear status unless it receives Western support for protection against Russia.

Bravo Ukraine quietly get Nukes. You’ve taken just about all the shit one country can take from another and it’s time to stop. Fuck the west…they’ve done nothing but talk. All Ukrainians will help pay for them. NO MORE BULLIES AND THREATS FROM RUSSIA THOSE DEVILS.

Russia was a co-signor of the Budapest Memorandum and did not honour their part (for that matter, neither did the US or UK!); so, I see no reason why Ukraine should still abide by it and maintain their non-nuclear status.

No one asked Russia whether it was ok with them just like they didn’t ask anyone before they invaded Crimea.

That’s an interesting new card to play in the high stakes of Ukraine versus Russia. I can see the point: if Russia tossed out the 1994 Agreement as meaningless, that can leave Ukraine free to go its own way and resuscitate the nukes.
