Russian Maidan Percolates

Brave Russians are starting to make a stand, speakout, gather and rally to express their views about Putin’s War with Ukraine and other issues inside Russia. Ukrainians the world over see this as the beginnings of #RussianMaidan. This is something that keeps Putin awake at night. Here is a chronological look at what’s been happening since August 12, 2014.

August 12, 2014. Moscow, Russia. Peace with Ukraine:  An Evening of Remembrance and Sorrow Memorial Service

Video of 200 brave Russians who gathered for a Anti War Rally despite a ban from Moscow City Hall.

The action started on Pushkin Square with the laying of mourning flowers (without any posters or banner). After that, the protesters marched to  the Embassy of Ukraine where they placed flowers and lit candles. Police detained about 20 people. They sang the Ukrainian National Anthem inside the paddywagon.

On August 14 Presnensky Court of Moscow delivered a decision against  anti-war rally participant  Iryna Kalmykov 20 thousand rubles under an abuse of the organization or of the order of the meeting. The woman also was sentenced to a fine of 500 rubles on charges of disobeying the order of a police officer.

August 20, 2014  Mustang Wanted

The star on top of the legendary Stalin skyscraper the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building in Moscow had an unscheduled paint job and flag of Ukraine hoisted on top of it.  

Ukrainian daredevil “Mustang Wanted” has posted on his Facebook page that he’s the person who painted the “seven sisters” spire in Moscow in Ukrainian blue and raised the Ukrainian flag overnight on August 19-20. The City of Moscow sent a worker up to repaint the star and remove the Ukrainian Flag and he took a now famous selfie.

August 21, 2014. Moscow.

Moscow’s Red Square, right in front of the mausoleum of Lenin, was decorated  with blue and yellow lines painted  right on the street.

August 21, 2014, Moscow. POWER LINES

More blue and yellow in Moscow. This time on Remizov St near the Nagoro metro station.  A high tension power line tower was painted in the colors of Ukraine’s flag.

August 24, 2014, St. Petersburg

A very brave woman draped in a Ukrainian flag held a protest with a message of Congratulations and Greetings  to Ukraine on it’s Independence Day. Some people did not like her action so much. 

 August 24, 2014, Moscow

On the 23rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence,  activists  unfurled a 10 m long  blue and yellow flag on a stone bridge  near the  Kremlin. They protested  against the aggression of Russia against Ukraine.You can watch the protesters unfurl the flag and get detained on this video. 5 of them were detained.

August 28, 2014, Moscow,  Action 1

Lone protester Dmitry Monakhov, a member of protest group Solidarity,  protests, at Manezh Square outside the Kremlin,with verbal message  “I am ashamed Putin is my President because  of  the recent invasion into Ukraine by Russian armed forces”. He announced the action on his twitter account on August 27th  See the action here. He was detained by the police and received a 15 day sentence.

August 28, 2014, Moscow. Action 2

A man only identified as Ilya Muscovite, is holding a banner reading “Stop Putin = No war”.  He went on to  say “I’m in the area from 11.00 am. Many Russians express their support, but can not join, as will be immediately all detained”.   Ilya also stressed that the majority of Russians are  “fooled” by Russian television and do not know that Russian President Vladimir Putin sent sent Russian troops to kill Ukrainians. August 28, 2104 Moscow, Russia Action 3

It was a very busy day on Manezh Square. Later the same day a handful of protesters arrived and protested Russia’s expansion into Ukraine, with six later being detained.

August 28, St. Petersburg, Russia

In St. Petersburg a man swam along the Fontanka River on a board with anti-Putin message  that read “Putin is eternal.” After the activist floated  under the Anichkov Bridge, the inscription changed to “Putin mutilation.”You can watch a video of the “Putin Eternal” action here.

August 30, 2014, St Petersburg

The Solidarity community movement held an anti-war protest on the Champ de Mars in  St. Petersburg on August 30. Around 100 people gathered to express they are against Putin’s with Ukraine.

August 31, 2014, Moscow, Russia

Five people detained by police on the picket lines against the warMichael Lashkevich Arthur Tulinov, Dmitry Fyodorov, Irina Epifanovskaya and Ildar Dading standing in a picket along Tverskaya Street in Moscow, were detained by police and taken to the Tver ATS.

August 31, 2014, Moscow, Russia

Writer and journalist Viktor Shenderovich picketed on Tverskaya St in Moscow  against the war with Ukraine.  He was  holding a banner that reads  “War with Ukraine – a shame and a crime.”

Later that same day,  Russian musician Bob Oblomov stood in front of the State Historical Museum with a poster “Make love not Novorossia”.

Composer Alexander Manotskov staged a single protest at Manege Sq was arrested for speaking out against the war. A total of six people had been detained that day.

The center of Moscow was busy again with anti-war pickets along Tverskaya St initiated by the NGO “ Action Committee protest”.

Police arrested “Light a candle for peace in Ukraine” participants

That same night Moscow had yet another protest in the form of a peace performance, a candle lighting vigil  for the  2249 of victims of the war in Ukraine. 7 people were arrested.

September 2, 2104, Voronezh

Residents of Voronezh speak out  speak out against  the war with Ukraine. They are against the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine.

September 3, 2014, St. Petersburg

September 5, 2014 Bryansk

In Bryansk,  the local Union of Afghan Veterans chapter led by Vladimir Barabanov  held a silent protest against Russia’s military intervention in eastern Ukraine.  Slogans displayed on signs messaged  “No War with Ukraine” and “Do Not Allow  a Second Afghanistan.” You can watch this innovate protest action here here.

September 5, 2014 St Petersburg

A very innovative action took place in the center of Saint Petersburg. A blindfolded woman dressed in the colors of the Russian flag , with blood on her hands, walked around moaning on Nevsky Prospekt

She had St. George’s ribbonson her wrists.  She was protesting against the military aggression of the Russian Federation and the invasion invasion  of Ukraine. The action has come to be known as“Blinded Russia with blood on their hands” in St. Petersburg.

The first video shows her stumbling and chanting  on Malaya Sadovaya Street. The second video shows her on the lying ground as a victim of Russian aggression.

September 6, 2014, Moscow

Another protest was held in Moscow. The September campaign “Strategy 6” action coincided with the celebration of the “Day of the City” in Moscow. People came out with pickets to the metro Novokuznetsk and “Manezh Square” to express their stance on the status of the Bolotnaya Square  May 6  political prisoners.  Watch the video of the action here.  

Later the same day  some  protesters  sang UKRAINE’S NATIONAL ANTHEM  on the streets of Moscow. Watch Alexander Zaporozhtev’s video here.

September 6, 2014 Tomsk

People called for peace on Friday on the main square of the Russian city of Tomsk The protesters  brought Ukrainian flags and banners saying “Stop demonizing Ukraine”, “I am against the war”

September 7, 2014 Ulyanovsk

September 7, 2014 Puskhin Square

On Sunday Alla Frolova and 32 friends went to Pushkin Square and protested against the war in Ukraine. Her sign said “There is Putin – you don’t need your brain.”

September 8, 2014, St. Petersburg

The St. Petersburg branch of the non-profit group “Soldiers Mothers” has appealed to the Justice Ministry to remove the “foreign agent” label applied to the organization in August. They were given this label because of their activism regarding the war with Ukraine.  One of chairs of the group published comments on the Ukraine conflict which the ministry viewed as “political activity.”

September 8, 2014 Moscow

A Moscow  subway car was painted with the colors of Ukraine’s flag.

September 9, 2014 Moscow

A group of passengers sang Ukraine’s National Anthem at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.  

September 21, 2014 Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Barnaul and other Russian cities.

Peace marches planned all over Russia on September 21. Anti-war activists have filed an application to Moscow City Hall for a March of Peace on September 21 calling for No War with Ukraine. The main demands of activists are stopping the aggressive foreign policy of Russia and bloodshed in Ukraine. Moscow organizers expect between 50 – 70,000 participants like they had on March 15, 2014.

Similar marches are expected in Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Barnaul and other cities.
