What is happening inside Batkivshchina party?

Oleksandr Turchynov, Arseniy Yatseniuk, Arsen Avakov and other members left the Batkivshchina political council demonstratively this Tuesday. Political experts predict that these politicians will join the party Petro Poroshenko’s Bloc, whose assembly took place on Wednesday. However, the party list will be announced in September.

The politicians withdrew from the Batkivshchina political council because part of the Parliament members refused to run in the elections together with other democratic patriots powers, in particular Petro Poroshenko’s party. This was written by Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov on his Facebook page.

“It was proposed to publicly sign the agreement on the principles and goals of the formation of a new, NATIONAL COALITION in the chosen parliament even before the elections with all the aforementioned participants of the process. Batkivshchina, Klitschko’s UDAR, Petro Poroshenko’s party, Svoboda, Slava Kyrylenko’s For Ukraine, Katerynchuk’s European Party and new, young parties and organizations nominated by Maidan, as well as non-party activists and majority members… I respect the opinion of friends and politicians from Batkivshchina who think that opposition to Poroshenko is a great good for the country… However I express my position honestly: IN TODAY’S SITUATION IT IS NOT RIGHT AND unacceptable. ONLY UNITY, DESPITE everything… Who left? Turchynov, Yatseniuk, Avakov, Denysova, Petrenko, Hrynevych, Holovko, Mateychenko, Pashynsky, Parubiy, Pyshny, Burbak, Fayermark, Khmil, Apostol, Yemets, Lunchenko…” wrote Avakov.

The media viewed these words as the withdrawal of said party members and the split of Batkivshchina. Meanwhile Avakov himself commented that is still a member of the party. The same information came from Sergiy Pashynsky. Andriy Perubiy noted to the media that he’d left the party over half a year ago.

No party member withdrawals

Batkivshchina’s secretariat has seen no official claims on part of members, said political council member Andriy Pavlovsky in an comment to Radio Liberty.

“I, as a member of the Batkivshchina political council, who was present at the assembly, can tell you that the political council voted unanimously that Batkivshchina would run in the elections a single team in the 2012 format. We stand for Yatseniuk to remain Prime Minister, and we demand a unification of all patriotic and democratic powers in the next Verkhovna Rada. The vote was unanimous. Everything else is personal positions, offenses, ambitions. We are talking about a union within the next Parliament,” noted Pavlovsky.

Unification for the elections was discussed at the Solidarnist party assembly, which was renamed Petro Poroshenko’s Bloc. Yury Lutsenko, who headed the party instead of Yury Stets, called for cooperation between UDAR, Batkishchina, the Front of Change and other democratic pro-Ukrainian parties. According to him, meetings will be held with Yatseniuk, Turchynov and Avakov.

“Consultations are only beginning at the moment. We are asking everyone, this regards both political powers and individual politicians. However the assembly is the one to approve party lists. It will not be available before September 5,” Yury Stets told Radio Liberty.

The able three

The media has been reporting on Yatseniuk and Turchynov’s possible joining Poroshenko’s political party for a long time. Former and current fellow party members to Yulia Tymoshenko were present at the Petro Poroshenko’s Bloc assembly, in particular Volodymyr Aryev, Oleksandr Bryhynets, Dmytro Andriyevsky, Ruslan Knyazevych and others.

It is Turchynov, Yatseniuk and Avakov that are the most able members of Batkivshchina, political expert Oleksandr Paliy told radio Liberty.

“Turchynov improved his positioning from the negative character everyone had been skeptical about. Yatseniuk as well. This trio will reinforce the political force they join very much. It might very well be Poroshenko’s party. Tymoshenko is perceived as an old politician. Even her party members see her as such – as a person from yesterday or even the day before. She might get 5%, maybe even more. But now we are not talking about percentages, but the fact that Ukraine needs a strong government able to resist the enemy.”

However, the political experts considers the most effective way to be a union between all democratic powers before the elections that the President was talking about. According to law, the registration of party electoral lists is over 40 days before the elections, so meetings may last over more than a week from now on.
