Russian TV channel RF recycled 2013 footage of Kazakhstan rocket explosion to “show” non-existent Ukrainian missile attack in Donbas

The Russian tele-radio company “Zvezda” aired a video of a Russian rocket explosion at the cosmodrome “Baikonur”, Kazakhstan which occurred on July 2, 2013. The Russian TV channel used this footage to claim a rocket was launched by Ukrainian forces at the town of Makiivka in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. The accompanying video shows comparisons of the original Kazakhstan explosion and the video-edit used in the Russian TV broadcast.

Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the information-analytical center RNBO, revealed further information:

“Tonight, the Russian tele-radio company “Zvezda” (network of the Armed Forces of Russia) accused the Ukrainian army of launching rockets, type “Tochka-U”, at the city of Makiivka. The narration accused Ukrainian Forces of bombing the city in order to liberate it in time for Independence Day. By broadcasting this video “report”,  Russians were threatening Ukraine with an international scandal. However, our analysts discovered that the video of this purported use of weapons of mass destruction by Ukrainian forces was actually footage from a completely different event: an explosion of a Russian rocket on July 2, 2013 in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.”

“This is just another example from the long list of Russian lies. This video clearly demonstrates the fabric of Russian propaganda, which unashamedly not only distorts facts, but also fabricates video records.”

Lysenko added that on numerous occasions, Russia has invented false accusations of Ukraine unleashing ballistic rockets at populated areas.
