SBU encourages Ukrainians to leave Russian social networks

July 28, 2014

A new anti-terrorist law comes into effect in Russia on August 1, 2014 to allow the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) to obtain practically all personal data on the users of internet resources registered in Russia.

As a result the FSB is granted legal authority to interfere with the personal lives of not only Russian citizens, but also foreigners, reports Presa Ukrainy. At the demands of Russian authorities, owners of email servers, blog hosts, forums and social networks would be under obligation to provide data on all users’ logins, e-mail addresses, and contact lists as well as data on the number, size and recipients of sent messages.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) warns that, in the current circumstances of ongoing Russian aggression on Ukraine territory, these new powers would allow the FSB to obtain information online about Ukrainian events and to further compromise national security.

The SBU is issuing a warning to all citizens concerned about the security of their personal information and recommends that they refrain from using internet resources located at Russian domains, particularly social networks and email accounts.
