Brazil interested in purchasing Russian air defense systems

Brazil announced that it was planning to purchase air defense systems from Russia and also cooperate in the field of nuclear energy. Putin called on BRICS countries to develop countermeasures against US sanctions policy.

During talks with her Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Dilma Rousseff, the President of Brazil, announced that her country was interested in purchasing Russian air defense systems and cooperating with Russia in the field of nuclear energy. “We stress the importance of cooperation in the sphere of defense and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. We cannot allow our country to be dependent on others in the field of economy and technology in the middle of the 21st century.” she said at a joint press conference with Putin in Brasilia on Monday, July 14.

Putin called Brazil the “most important partner” in Latin America, noting that both countries have the same interest in “key international issues”. AFP reports that, following the talks, the two leaders signed an agreement on cooperation in the sphere of defense, economy, technology and health.

During his visit to Brazil, Vladimir Putin called on his BRICS partners – an organization which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – to develop countermeasures against the sanctions policy adopted by the US and its allies. Noting that Russia is currently exposed to sanction “attacks”, Putin appealed to his BRICS partners “to devise a system of measures that would prevent certain countries from being “harassed” just because they disagree with specific foreign policy decisions of the US and its allies, and conduct a civilized, mutually respectful dialogue on all contentious issues.
