Support the initiative “Patriot Defence” to save lives of Ukrainian soldiers who defend their motherland

Glory to Ukraine!
I apologize in advance for the length of this email. There is important information I would like to convey in detail.

The Ukrainian World Congress initiative “Patriot Defence” (patriotdefence.org) has already begun training Ukrainian soldiers in military specific Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), Combat Lifesaver courses, and combat medic courses, and is providing IFAKs (Improved First Aid Kits) to each soldier trained and combat paramedic backpacks to each combat medic trained.

Patriot Defence uses professional NATO certified instructors and newly trained Ukrainian Combat Lifesaver (CLS) and TCCC certified instructors who teach the soldiers in combat first aid and military medics in pre-hospital care designed specifically for military personnel. All TCCC courses are not necessarily military oriented-some are for law enforcement and civilian agencies. Our courses are the same ones taught to NATO and US soldiers. Too many groups are teaching the wrong types of courses and supplying the wrong types of materials for IFAKs (Improved First Aid Kits) to Ukrainian troops (for example, instead of buying Celox granules, soldier require QuikClot or Celox gauze). We have already taught over 1200 soldiers in our courses and are training another 600 soldiers and 60 combat medics in the next week.

The military requires specific combat-oriented training, and our professional instructors are former US, British and Czech military medics and doctors with years of actual combat experience in Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Lebanon, etc. Our course materials are those used by US Armed Forces. We have access to the training bases for all Ukrainian military forces-Army, Border Service, Interior Ministry (including National Guard), SBU, territorial battalions, and others.

The US Army continues to do research regarding soldier mortality rate and how to reduce it, in the field of battle. They’ve concluded that (roughly) 60% of preventable deaths on the battlefield result from catastrophic blood loss, 30% from tension pneumothorax and 10% from blocked airways. Moreover, they also conclude that, with the right training and equipment, CLS + IFAK, many of these lives can be saved.

I have heard from many civilian doctors and “medics” who were on Maidan that their experiences have qualified them as being “combat medics”. I was there too. I saw how the doctors and medics did a phenomenal job in saving as many people as they did with almost no medical equipment. However, what happened on Hrushevsky St. in January and on Maidan, Institutska St. and Mariyinsky Park in February was not combat. It was an attack on civilians. I was a volunteer in the makeshift Surgical Unit at KMDA, where scores of gunshot wounds and grenade injuries were brought in. What I saw there were mass casualties from an attack by a military force on a civilian population. However, that does not qualify me as a “combat medic” the way Tim, our lead instructor, is, with his years of training and service as both a soldier in the British Armed Forces and as a combat medic in conflict zones like Northern Ireland and Iraq. Or like the retired Ukrainian Army surgeon Vasyl at KMDA who had been in Afghanistan and Lebanon.

Please watch the videos of the kind of training we provide (below) and a very informative clip on to respond to a tension pneumothorax under fire from the film Three Kings. During the pneumothorax decompression portion of the CLS course, the people we’ve trained immediately remembered this scene:

Our group in consultation with the professional trainers has developed and is purchasing the components of an IFAK based on the US military standardWe provide our standardized IFAK to each of the soldiers trained. Each IFAK costs about $100. You can read more about the IFAK on our site patriotdefence.org.

We are providing professional, specialized training and equipment for the Ukrainian military, as one component of an overall program to modernize the Ukrainian armed forces. Please direct all inquiries and requests for trainings to patriotdefence.org, or to our coordinator, Vitaliy Vlasenko +38 (097) 484 15 90 [email protected]

This project needs financial support. There are costs for professional equipment and trainers. There is a PayPal link on the site to donate, and the specific bank transfer details are below. ODFFU is collecting the funds to purchase the components of the IFAK that are not available in Ukraine, Dnipro LLC is providing broker agent services at no cost, and Air Ukraine International is transporting the items purchased in the US to Kyiv on their airplanes at no charge.
