Russia is becoming a new Evil Empire

Evil Empire Very Evil Empire

Vitaliy Portnikov, Ukrainian journalist

The fact that special camps have been established on the territory of the Evil Empire to train terrorists, mercenaries, and saboteurs is awful confirmation of the transformation of a country claiming democracy and normal life for its citizens into a special facility for training in hatred and murder.

They say in Kyiv that a special camp is planned in Crimea for preparing terrorists who will then be sent into Ukrainian territory. Possibly, this information about a “terrorist training camp” seems terrifying for some, but it is created by a civilized country—Russia. But there’s actually nothing particularly new in this information, as the Soviet Union used the Crimean territory to train terrorists of different organizations governed by the former Communist party leadership and used to destabilize situations in different countries, and the USSR led a complicated fight against the US and other Western countries for influence over them.

The training of terrorists was an element of the Cold War. And as we can see, there are no significant shifts in the psychology of the Russian political leadership and Russian special services. Moscow still believes that real people’s movements do not exist and the people have no right to express their opinions (neither in elections nor during people’s revolutions). Therefore, television propaganda instead of elections, eradication of the opposition, and finally election rigging are what have kept Vladimir Putin’s regime in power for so long. And as we well know, nobody in the Kremlin is going to say goodbye to this power.

And what instead of people’s revolutions? They are confident in Russia that every people’s movement is a political technique by Moscow’s opponents to reduce its impact on the countries Russia believes to be in its sphere of influence. That is how they treated the first Maidan, and the Revolution of Dignity in 2013-2014. But they cannot counter the people’s anger, the people’s revolution at the Kremlin, by means of some alternative revolts. They counted on a revolt in the mysterious “Novorossiya,” but we see what has happened instead. There was terrorist activity in the Donbas.

As usual the Kremlin, as in the “best” Soviet times, supplanted the people’s activity, the people’s will, the people’s volition with real terrorism. However, a terrorist is a manufactured product: there is not a great number of daredevils, there is not a great number of those who have no honor, dignity, and respect for his compatriots, respect for human life; these scoundrels are worth their weight in gold in any region, any country. And we and the authoritarian regimes understand perfectly well that Russia is a classic Middle East-type authoritarian regime, training such people in their special camps.

At the same time, I think that this will not only apply to Ukraine. In Crimea there may be a camp which will train criminals to destabilize the situation in our country and all over the post-Soviet sphere, as well as in the West and the Middle East. Because the people who are, so to speak, the main ranks of those destabilizing the situation in many countries around the world passed through Soviet schools, through Soviet universities, through Soviet terrorist training camps. It’s all being restored before our eyes—Russia is becoming the New Evil Empire, the new USSR. The fact that special camps have been established on the territory of the Evil Empire to train terrorists, mercenaries, and saboteurs is awful confirmation of the transformation of a country claiming democracy and normal life for its citizens into a special facility for training in hatred and murder.
