Following the refusal of insurgents to lay down their arms or cooperate a unilateral ceasefire, President Petro Poroshenko announced the resumption of the Anti-Terrorist Operation of the Armed Forces & National Guard on late on June 30.

We will attack and we will liberate our land. The end of the ceasefire is our response to terrorists, rebels, looters, all those who mock the civilians who paralyze the economy of the region; who rip the payment of salaries, pensions, stipends; who undermine the railroads, destroy water pipes, those who deprive a normal peaceful life.

Summary

As the ATO commenced early reports indicated that both artillery and airstrikes were being ordered as the military advanced, targeting previously-discovered terrorist positions.

Donetsk:

Destroyed Sloviansk TV tower
  • Loud explosions heard in Donetsk (video), multiple outlets reported insurgents are attempting to fire at jets with heavy machine guns. (10:20 AM)
  • 4 killed, 5 wounded in Kramatorsk as mini-bus came under fire, reports Donetsk RSA. Details were not disclosed. (9:50 AM)
  • Residents of Horlivka report tank battles involving the Russian Vostok Battalion. Sources say at least 4 Russian tanks are involved and civilians are fleeing the area in panic. (9:47 AM)
  • Shelling by pro-Russian insurgents in Sloviansk destroys city’s TV tower on Mount Karachun, where Ukrainian troops were stationed. There were no injuries reported.
  • Spokesman for the ATO states a number of insurgents have defected and/or deserted and are in ongoing negotiations, providing intelligence to Ukrainian forces. (8:41 AM)
  • In addition to heavy gunfire in Donetsk proper, resident of Snizhne, Horlivka, and Kramatorsk reported ongoing shelling. (4:00 AM)
  • During the night 1 soldier was wounded by sniper fire near Tarany, Donetsk region. (Tymchuk)

    February 10 – During the day the militants shelled residential districts of the city of Kramatorsk and the airfield, where ATO's General Staff was located. 8 civilians were killed by the terrorists as a result of this attack. According to General Staff, the city was shelled from multiple launch rocket systems "Smerch". Russian artillery poses a great danger for anything located 120 km from the front – the Russians can fire at it at any time.

    February 9 – German Chancellor Angela Merkel has put forward an ultimatum for Putin – she gave Russian President Vladimir Putin time until Wednesday to agree on a "road map" to end fighting in eastern Ukraine. If Russian Federation doesn't make concessions and decides to block the agreement, Merkel promised Putin further sanctions against Russian companies including, in particular, freezing of assets (sanctions may include defense industry and possibly financial sector). At the same time Merkel, who is publicly against the supply of arms to Ukraine, has told Putin in private that she will not resist Barack Obama if he decides to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine.

    February 9 – Approximately 1,5 thousand Russian soldiers and 300 military vehicles have arrived from Russia in Ukraine over the weekend, – said NSDC spokesman Andriy Lysenko. He emphasized that Russian Federation continues to transfer ammunition to Ukraine.

    February 9 – During the day terrorists continuously attempted to cut off the city of Debaltseve (controlled by Ukrainian troops) from main units of Ukrainian army. Their attempts to stop transport communication at the "road of life" Donetsk-Debaltseve have failed. Prior to negotiations, which will take place in Minsk on Wednesday, the terrorists would like to occupy Debaltseve because it is an important railway junction (to strengthen Putin's position).

According to him, bank institutions which could not manage to move out of the occuppied territory the full amount of cash held there, ruined them by a special paint which cannot be cleaned off. "Regardless of this, the terrorists started to use the stolen tinted money for their own purposes as well as to settle their accounts with the residents. Stealing and using the stolen as one's own property is a typical method of acting among the Russian terrorist groups, added Turchynov. "We warn the inhabitants, that no Ukrainian bank institution will accept tinted stolen money. All who will try to use this money, stolen by the terrorists, will be apprehended and detained as participants of the crime of robbery,"stated RNBO Secretary.
