The ceasefire does not mean that Ukrainian soldiers cannot shoot in response – Poroshenko

Ukraine is ready to restore its territorial integrity by all means, but priority is currently given to peaceful solutions. This is was stated by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in his speech published on the official website.

“We now have enough power and political will in order to land the deciding blow to the illegally armed formations,” claims Poroshenko.

“All illegal armed formations have to understand: the ceasefire we initiated does not mean that Ukrainian soldiers are prohibited from shooting in response. Any of the mercenaries’ attempts to attack will be countered with a dignified response,” added the President.

Meanwhile Poroshenko discussed some of the details of his peace plan. According to him, in the nearest days the Verkhovna Rada will be proposed to approve the law regarding amnesty to members of illegal armed formations which did not kill peaceful civilians and Ukrainian soldiers, and which will soon disarm.

A 10-kilometre buffer zone will be created at the Ukraine-Russia border, which will become “an additional means of protection from further infiltration of Ukrainian territory by mercenaries are weapons.”

“Another important element of the plan is the freeing of administrative buildings in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. Dismount roadblocks and barricades around them. Order has to return to the streets of all Ukrainian cities. Speaking of which, not just in Donbas. Those who have become too comfortable sitting on tyres in other regions of Ukraine have to heed this information as well,” emphasised Poroshenko.

He also noted that completely disparate views will not be an obstacle for participation in the talks: “I am ready to talk with those who made mistakes, who erroneously stood on the separatists’ positions. Except for, naturally, those who have to do with terrorist acts, murder or torture.”

Also Poroshenko guaranteed safety to all participants of the talks.

The President announced the halt of the anti-terrorist operation for a week starting June 20th, until 10 p.m. on June 27th.
