Turchynov Hopes Courts “Put a Period to CPU’s Existence”

Monday, May 19, 2014,19:16

Ukraine’s Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov has instructed the Ministry of Justice to probe actions made by the Communist Party of Ukraine. Turchynov announced the measure during remembrance events in “Bykivnyanski Mohyly” reserve in Kyiv on May 18, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“Today I have signed an official letter to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, in which I urge the Minister taking into consideration all the materials given by the Security Service of Ukraine and General Prosecutor’s Office on the illegal anti-constitutional activity of the Communist Party,” Turchynov reported.

“I am sure that Ukrainian court will put a period to this case,” added the Acting President.

Previously, Turchynov announced that he would ask the courts to consider banning CPU as it is a party involved in separatist activity. The proposal comes as a reaction by Turchynov to Petro Symonenko’s speech in the Verkhovna Rada on May 13, who accused the government of organizing massacres in Odesa. Symonenko compared it to the Inquisition, he tabbed law enforcement officers from the western provinces and National Guard as “thugs” and said they allegedly shot the “peaceful demonstration in Mariupol.”

In response, the speaker requested that Symonenko’s microphone be muted and deprived him of the ability to end his speech. “In Mariupol, criminals and terrorists attacked the Department of Internal Affairs, killed policemen and the troopers protected them! … Liars have no place in Parliament! … Go lie elsewhere!” said Turchynov.

According to the Acting President, he was struck by the cynicism of the CPU. “Symonenko repeats the lies and propaganda promoted by the Russian media. It’s a cynical lie!” an outraged Turchynov roared. “I will appeal to the Ministry of Justice; there is a lot of material on the complicity of the Communist Party in organizing terrorist and separatist activities,” he said.

“I have asked the Ministry of Justice to consider this issue and, if there is evidence, to file materials regarding the prohibition of the Communist Party of Ukraine,”, said the acting President.
