Donbas miners want arms to fend off the ‘separatists’ in eastern Ukraine

2014/05/15 • News

Independent Union of Donbas Miners President Mykhailo Volynets has appealed to the Ukrainian government to provide arms to the miners so that they can defend cities of Donbas from separatists and terrorists.

“The moment came when the miners have to act decisively and fight separatists,” says Volynets.

Donbas miners are worried that only 3 out of more than 60 mines in Rostov region next to Ukraine are still operational. Russia’s main coal region, the Kuzbas, is all open pit mining. Together, these spell massive unemployment for miners should the Donbas join Russia and miners are mostly very much against it.
