SBU: snipers and radioactive material for a dirty bomb

Tuesday, May 6, 2014, 17:53

The State Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported on the elimination of a snipers’ nest at the TV Tower in the city of Konstantinivka on May 3. SBU spokesperson Marina Ostapenko reported on it at a briefing in the Anti-Terrorist Center.

According to Ostapenko, during the operation the Alpha special unit was resisted by a group of gunmen twice its size. “We have injured officers. As far as I know there are two of them, but they are alive. And Alpha fully accomplished its task; the firing point of the enemy was destroyed,” Ostapenko said.

She went on to say thar, “revealed snipers’ spots in Horlivka, Semenivka and Sloviansk have been taken into action as well as the firing-points around the Tsaritsino Hotel complex, Shakhtobudivnik health resort and the city hospital at Sloviansk.”

Ostapenko reported that the SBU continued to uncover diversionist groups around the villages of Makarivka and Krasniy Lyman and the city of Luhansk. Defense schemes and mined streets have also been discovered in the village of Druzhkivka, as well as Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.  “Practically all Kramatorsk is under control of the Anti-Terrorist Center except the downtown where, as in Sloviansk, the separatists continue to hold the Ministry of Internal Affairs, SBU and municipality buildings,” she said.

Ostapenko also announced that SBU counter-intelligence in Chernihiv Oblast had seized 1.5kg of a radioactive substance, possibly containing uranium.

“The dangerous substance was brought into the territory of Ukraine from the self-proclaimed republic of Transdnistria by a car with foreign plates and stored in a primitive container,” Ostapenko said.

According to Ostapenko, during the operation the SBU detained 10 people, including, according to preliminary information, one citizen of the Russian Federation.

During the investigation into the matter, information was revealed that leads the SSU to not exclude that the group had intended to create a dirty bomb and use it in conjunction with mass actions in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine
