Avakov on Separatists Detained by Special Forces: Speechless

Monday, May 5, 2014, 15:15

Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov released details regarding the release of ten separatists connected to the tragedy in Odesa on Saturday. The news comes from Yuriy Butusov, who quotes the minister.

The separatists detained in Odesa were released because of the Deputy Attorney General’s personal decision. He prohibited their transportation to Kyiv for further investigation, and the prosecutor agreed on the decision about their release.

According to Butusov, Avakov reacted on the events of May 4 in Odesa the following way. “I am out of words to express my anger about the release of the 10 provocateurs, because of whom in Odesa 43 people were killed and 160 injured”.

“I want to speak openly about the reasons for what happened. The detainees were to be convoyed to Kyiv last night the night of May 3-4). But Deputy Attorney General Banchuk strictly prohibited the forwarding of the detained from Odesa to Kyiv for further investigation. As a result, city’s police department was blocked. The police was ordered not to release the provocateurs and to prepare to defend the building”, stated Avakov.

“But the prosecutor decided on releasing the detained. This self-governed decision by the prosecutor’s office needs the most serious investigation. Release of the provocateurs can lead to new incidents of violence”, he added.

As MIA’s Head stated, the reaction of the Ministry is removing everybody at the UVS and criminal cases have been initiated. “The new Head of Odesa’s UVS, Ivan Katerynchuk, is already heading here”, added Avakov.
