Russia does not like the initiative of Ukraine’s new leadership on possible changes to its non-aligned status. This announcement comes in a release from the Foreign Ministry of Russia. Russian diplomats pointed to a statement from Acting President Turchynov that Ukraine is considering changing its neutral status. Russia also mentioned a bill submitted to Parliament that suggests excluding the non-alignment provisions from Ukrainian legislation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry “reminded” readers that the issue of Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine caused many problems for Yushchenko’s presidency. “This led to a freezing of Russian-Ukrainian political contacts, to the “headache” in relations between NATO and Russia, and perhaps the most dangerous, to a deepening of the split in Ukrainian society,” the Russian diplomats warned. “Kyiv should understand that further prospects for Russian-Ukrainian cooperation, including those in economics sphere, largely depend on the actions taken in terms of Ukraine’s foreign policy,” said the Foreign Ministry.
