Ukrainian painter: Civilised world stays silent while democracy being destroyed

Ukrainian painter Boris Yeghiazaryan: “The civilized world is constantly delaying its response, thus, enabling the Ukrainian authorities to organize the third round of bestial atrocities in Ukraine by the scenario of Kremlin puppeteers”

Our reality is dramatic. I wake up every morning with the feeling that something irretrievable happened yesterday. I bear Serhiy Nigoyan and our other guys in mind every second. In their fight for European values, the Ukrainians rushed into the breach, and in this difficult times we have the right to count on the support of the countries that have proclaimed those values long time ago. After all, these states are our partners from the standpoint of the very idea of Maidan! The primordial concept of Maidan was the European integration, subsequently, it transformed into struggle to oust the criminal and corrupt authorities of Ukraine from power, as it became clear that no еurointegration would ever be possible with current deceitful authorities.

Occasionally we hear voices of encouragement from abroad. Not long ago I sadly noticed that the entire civilized world, while following the events in Ukraine, was delicately silent (except for the leaders of a few states),and as of today I can state that we hear strong words of support from the US Secretary of State and even the President of the USA. Efforts of the European diplomacy are also promising. For me, as for every Ukrainian, it is something long expected come true, especially as the leaders of the Western countries for the first time entered into talks with the leaders of the Ukrainian opposition. It is a very strong and serious step forward. Nonetheless, I keep saying: it is still not enough. Why? It is not for me to say that the West possesses leverage that has still not been used, and while the West continues lingering, we remain vulnerable and are exposed to more ingenious brutalities.

As a Ukrainian artist, I continue to insist that the civilized world, guided by its diplomatic delicacy, is constantly delaying its response, thus, enabling the Ukrainian authorities to organize the second or even the third round of bestial atrocities in Ukraine by the scenario of Kremlin puppeteers.

I have mentioned in my previous article that I would have withdrawn back my paintings from Europe if I had an exhibition there. Sometime in the nineties, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Alexander Arzoumanyan presented US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright with my painting “Noah’s Ark”. To my knowledge, this painting is currently in the State Department Museum. I do not have any right to withdraw this painting back as it was purchased by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and donated during an official meeting. But if it was in my power, I would have at least covered it with a linen cloth to raise my protest.

You may wonder why I remembered the painting “Noah’s Ark” in these difficult days for Ukraine. Street protests that took place in Yerevan in 2008 against the fraudulent presidential election, to a certain extent, bear resemblance to the present situation in Kyiv. During one night ten persons were killed and thousands were injured and maimed by the authorities in Yerevan. Prisons were filled with hundreds of peaceful protestors who suffered from the violent attacks by the riot police and the army. The civilized world remained silent and swallowed it.

Here and now, the Ukrainian democracy is being destroyed in the same way, whereas we are given to understand that we need to face our problems alone.
